Washington, 15 feb (EFE).- The United States today lamented the “horrible” news that 101 Tibetans have set fire from 2009 in protest of the Chinese occupation of their country, and urged Beijing to review its policies towards the region.
“We regret these horrific figures and remain deeply concerned by reports that these immolations continue.”, the State Department spokesperson said today, Victoria Nuland, at his daily press conference.
The figure of one hundred immolations was reached this Wednesday, when a young Tibetan set himself on fire in Kathmandu, and was surpassed on Thursday when a monk died for the same reason in the Chinese province of Sichuan (south of the country, bordering Tibet).
“We urge those who sacrifice themselves or those who may be considering it to think carefully about whether this is the best way to express themselves”, Nuland stated..
“And we also call on the Chinese government to examine its own policies in Tibet that have caused this type of tension and frustration.”, He added.
Many Tibetans accuse Beijing of religious and cultural repression, while the Chinese government rejects criticism and claims that the inhabitants of the region enjoy freedom and that investment in recent decades has modernized and improved the standard of living in the area..
