The president of the United States, Donald Trump, signed a law authorizing sanctions against Chinese officials if they interfere in the selection of the next Dalai Lama of Tibetan Buddhists.

The US Congress overwhelmingly passed the Tibet Support Act amid growing concern that Beijing may try to impose a successor to Tibet's spiritual leader. 85 years, with the aim of weakening the movement for greater freedoms in the Himalayan region.

In January, after the House of Representatives tested the law, Pekín dijo que la iniciativa "interfiere groseramente en los asuntos internos de China".

The law also prohibits the United States from opening new consulates in China until it is allowed one in the capital of Tibet., Lhasa, and authorizes the financing of groups that promote the preservation of culture, education and environmental sustainability in the Himalayan region.

The International Campaign for Tibet, an organization close to the Dalai Lama, estimó que la ley demuestra que "la comunidad internacional (…) se opondrá a los abusos de derechos humanos de China en el Tíbet".

14º Dalai Lama, Nobel Peace Prize winner, has considered breaking tradition by naming his own successor, possibly a girl, while I'm alive.

in 1995, Beijing arrested a six-year-old boy recognized by the Dalai Lama as the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama, another highly influential Tibetan position.
