The High Representative of Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union, Catherine Ashton, today expressed its concern about the deterioration of the human rights situation in Tibet.
When speaking before the European Parliament, Ashton noted that “the EU is particularly concerned by the news of mass arrests and detentions taking place in the Tibet Autonomous Region following the immolations in Lhasa”.
He also made clear the EU's concern about “restrictions on freedom of expression in Tibet and manifestations of Tibetan identity.”.
Exhorto the Government of China to act with restraint and authorize access by foreign diplomats and journalists to the entire Tibet Autonomous Region.
Since March 2011, according to ashton, 37 Tibetans burned themselves to death protesting against Beijing's tutelage over their region. The Chinese government maintains that these immolations are acts carefully prepared with the help of Tibetan separatists abroad..
