BEIJING.- This is the most recent of dozens of immolations of Tibetans since 2009.

Free Tibet, based in London, reported that Tamdrin Dorjee, of 52 years, He died at the scene near Tsoe Monastery in Gansu province., in northwest China.

The organization noted that the man was the grandfather of the 7th Gungthang Rinpoche, whom Tibetan Buddhists consider the reincarnation of an important religious figure.

Dorjee's body was taken to his native village, said Free Tibet. Photographs supposedly taken at the scene show dozens of villagers and monks gathered around a smoking body.

The self-proclaimed Tibetan government in exile confirmed the report. He said the immolation was followed by a heavy paramilitary police presence in and around the monastery.

More of 50 Tibetans have set themselves on fire to protest against China's control in the Himalayan region, and most of them have died, according to figures from groups defending the rights of the inhabitants of that area.
