The Casa del Tibet Foundation of Barcelona together with the Tibetan Community and with the support of sympathizers of the Tibetan cause and representatives of the Stop Confucius citizen platform, will concentrateThis afternoon at 6pm in front of the Confucius Institute (IC) from Barcelona (c/ Elizabeths 10, Multipurpose Room) to show its rejection of the information manipulation carried out by that institute in the countries where it is present.

The Confucius Institute of Barcelona has scheduled a conference at 18:30h under the title “History and present of Tibet”.

In recent years, Professors at universities that host IC have expressed concern about the hidden objectives of that institution and that it goes beyond the teaching of Chinese language and culture.. The IC program is administered and funded by the China Office of the International Chinese Language Council, called Hanban, belonging to the country's Ministry of Education.

One of the institutions contrary to the activities of the Confucius institutes in the world, the National Association of Scholars (NAS, by its acronym in English), published a report last April analyzing China's efforts to influence American universities titled “Outsourced to China: Confucius Institutes and Soft Power in American Higher Education. (Ver: he document)”

In the prologue of that report it is said that “Since 2004, The Chinese government has established Confucius Institutes that offer Chinese language and culture courses at colleges and universities around the world., including more than 100 in the United States. These Institutes avoid Chinese political history and human rights abuses. They present Taiwan and Tibet as undisputed territories of China, and educate a generation of American students to know nothing more about China than the official history of the regime. This is a study of the 12 Confucius Institutes in New York and New Jersey. This report examines the influence of China's power through American higher education and reveals new data on funding policies, recruitment and academic freedom of China.”

The controversy surrounding Confucius Institutes, especially in American and Canadian universities that have closed their doors to this institution, It is also the central theme of the documentary "In the name of Confucius", by director Doris Liu, in which he discusses the true objectives of the Confucius Institutes in the Alliance for the Defense of Freedom, 26 April. It recommends that academic institutions break relations with their Confucius Institutes.

In our country, the citizen platform Stop Confucius Institute created with the purpose of “stopping the establishment of Confucius Institutes, discrimination tools, handling, censorship and, according to Canadian intelligence, “espionage agencies of the Chinese regime”, called for a demonstration 5 June, to protest the inauguration of a new IC in the Aragonese capital scheduled for next September (ver info) .

According to that platform, «Both the Canadian Association of University Teachers (I'M LOOKING FOR) such as the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) have asked universities to end ties with the Confucius Institute program». He also adds that institutions such as the Elcano Royal Institute «have collected controversies around the hiring policy, the alleged surveillance of Chinese students on campuses and restrictions on freedom of expression or conscience and religion»
