Violence returns to Tibet

RTVE. News 24 hours. 27 January, 2012

Chinese security forces have killed six Tibetans in the Drango region (Luhuo, in Chinese) and five in Sertha (This), Tibetan-majority areas in southwest China's Sichuan province, in the protests registered on the days 23 and 24 January. The demonstrations broke out after 17 Tibetan monks have attempted to immolate themselves since February 2009 in protest against the repression suffered by the ethnic group by the Chinese authorities. Twelve of them have died, of which four in the first two weeks of this year. Most of these immolations took place around the emblematic Buddhist monastery of Kirti, in the Ngawa region (Aba, in Chinese), in the same province.
