THE VANGUARD: Exiled Tibetans ask for more support from the EU to resolve the conflict with China

New Delhi, 18 ene (EFE).- The head of the Tibetan Government in exile, Lobsang Sangay, today asked the European Union (UE) mayores esfuerzos para apoyar el "acercamiento a medio camino", a dialogue process to achieve autonomy for Tibet without separating from China.

"Europa ha hecho mucho por el Tíbet, pero deseamos que haga más", the president of the Central Tibetan Administration told Efe (CTA), tras la presentación de la campaña "Thank you India" in New Delhi.

Although he recognizes that some European countries have raised their voices to support dialogue between Tibetans and the Government of China, Sangay believes that the EU, as a set, debería seguir el ejemplo de EEUU y defender de manera "más firme" el denominado "acercamiento a medio camino".

This way, If Europe supports the non-violent path pursued by Tibet, Countries involved in other conflicts could follow their example and seek solutions peacefully..

"Esto es una prueba para la UE y los países europeos también: ¿Are you for non-violence or for violence?? Si estáis por la no violencia entonces deberíais apoyar al Tíbet", Sangay added..

La campaña "Thank you India", that will begin 31 March, aims to thank the country for welcoming Tibetans, one year before the sixtieth anniversary of the Dalai Lama's exile, who has since resided in India.

China assures that Tibet has been an inseparable part of its territory for centuries, although Tibetans in exile argue that the region was independent until Mao Zedong's communist troops occupied it in the early 1990s. 50.

In March of 1959, the dalai lama, religious leader, fled with others 80.000 Tibetans to India, where he remains exiled.

Of those around 128.000 Tibetan exiles, more of 94.000 reside in India, some 13.500 in Nepal, almost 2.000 in Bhutan and those near 19.000 remaining distributed throughout the rest of the world, according to CTA data. EFE
