Beijing. (EFE).- The president of the USA, Barack Obama, "se hace el tonto" when meeting with the Tibetan spiritual leader, he Dalai Lama, en un encuentro que sólo sirve para "irritar a China y hacer que los chinos se planteen la sinceridad de Washington" in the bilateral relationship, official media in China say today.

Obama met with the Dalai Lama at the White House on Friday for the third time in his term, in a conversation that has motivated serious anger from the Chinese Government, who last night summoned the American chargé d'affaires in Beijing, Daniel Kritenbrink, to express their protests.

According to the official Chinese agency, Xinhua, the Chinese vice foreign minister, Zhang Yesui, expresó la "fuerte indignación y la firme oposición" from China to the meeting, which considers a serious interference in the internal affairs of the country.

China assures that Tibet has been an inseparable part of its territory for centuries, while Tibetans argue that the region was long virtually independent until it was occupied by communist troops in 1951.

The Dalai Lama, whom Beijing accuses of promoting Tibetan separatism, fled China in 1959, after the failure of a rebellion against communist rule, and has resided since then in the northern Indian city of Dharamsala, waiting to one day be allowed to return to Tibet.

The official Chinese media today angrily report the meeting in the Map Room of the White House - not in the Oval Office, as would befit a head of state-.

The diary Global Times, part of the People's Daily group, the official organ of the Communist Party of China, opina que "para EEUU, the Dalai Lama is an easy card to play, not as powerful as before, pero una carta que jugar con China".

El mandatario expresó su apoyo a la "vía intermedia" as a solution for Tibet, that is to say, neither assimilation nor independence for Tibetans in China.
