The Baltasar Garzón International Foundation has participated in the ninth edition of Humans Fest, the Film and Human Rights Festival held in Valencia between the 9 and the 18 February, Organized by Foundation for Justice.
Last Sunday, The head of the Fibgar Legal Department, Claudia Cano, represented the foundation in the projection of shorts for human rights that was held at the Colegio Mayor Rector Peset. Universal jurisdiction and kidnapping the Tibet
In addition to an interesting film program, The festival has opted for the celebration of three round tables that have highlighted current issues such as the media, Universal justice and cinema and democracy.
Baltasar Garzón participated in the table on universal justice that was held on Tuesday in the Aula Magna de la Nau, After the preview of the documentary kidnapping the Tibet, by director Juanma Chavarrías. Kidnapping the Tibet is about the Chinese occupation of Tibet and its worldwide transcendence, since it has come to cause a change in our laws of universal jurisdiction. His argument is the basis for the subsequent debate on universal jurisdiction and about the principle that allows any state to investigate and judge serious crimes, Like those with humanity or genocide, regardless of where they happen.
Next to its director, The president of Fibgar shared a table with other professionals of law and human rights such as José Elías Esteve, Professor of the University of Valencia and lawyer in the Tibetan case; Héctor Faver, Director of the documentary participating in the Official Section Lesa Humanity and Thubten Wangchen, Representative by Europe of the Tibetan Parliament in exile.
Garzón stressed that “the value of universal jurisdiction is not just sentences, but the doors that open with the processes. And you cannot renounce universal jurisdiction by a political or economic quota ”.
Humans Fest, which is marked as the main objective "critical reflection on the causes of inequality through a committed cinema and debate spaces", end next Sunday, 18 February.
