Thubten Wangchen (Kyirong, 1954), director of theHouse of Tibet Foundation from Barcelona, has been the architect of alandmark court decision. In it 2005, filed acomplaint against severalchinese leaders bygenocide in itTibet. After a long process, invoked the principle ofuniversal jurisdiction and , by having Spanish nationality, he finally managed toNational Courtimputed last week, for this position, alformer Chinese president Hu Jintao (2003-2013), which was alsoformer secretary general of theChinese Communist Party In the Tibet between 1988 and 1992.
–¿What does this decision of the Spanish justice mean for you??
–We never lost hope, but it was a surprise and great news. It is the first time that a court indicts a former Chinese president for the repression of Tibet. Hu, in his time in Tibet, was responsible for many human rights violations: arrests, killings, religious and cultural persecution… His indictment has brought joy and hope. It means the recognition of Tibetan suffering.
–¿He thinks he will prosper?
–I think so. Until two months ago Hu Jintao still had some power, but he has already lost his immunity and is an ordinary citizen. Now the judges will be able to continue their investigations and examine the evidence. The accusation means that he could be arrested and extradited if he travels to a country that has an agreement in force with Spain.. It is also a symbolic action for those who fight for human rights around the world..
