New Delhi, 13 jun (EFE).- Indian authorities have arrested eight people of Chinese nationality for working illegally in the northern region of Himachal Pradesh, where the Dalai Lama and the authorities of the Tibetan Government in exile have their residence.

The detainees had a tourist visa, but they worked as carpenters and painters in the town of Chauntra, to some 120 kilometers from Dharamsala, where the dalai lama lives, police superintendent Abhishek Dular told IANS today.

Several Indian media today rate the Chinese, arrested last night, como "espías", aunque Dular aseguró que "todavía" There is nothing that allows them to be classified as such..

The police seized 50.000 dollars and telephone cards during the operation that culminated in the arrests.

"Llevaban viviendo aquí algún tiempo de manera individual. Their identities are being investigated, porque no se habían registrado en la oficina de extranjería", said the police officer.

Chauntra is located in the vicinity of Kangra district, where there is an important settlement of Tibetan exiles.

The Dalai Lama fled Tibet after an anti-communist revolt in 1959 and until this year he headed the Tibetan political administration from his exile in the Himachal locality of Dharamsala, although this is not officially recognized by any country.

Last May, The Tibetan Government in exile announced the installation of chemical detectors in the Dalai Lama's security detail, after he revealed to a British media that there was an alleged Chinese plan to poison him.

"No podemos descartar la posibilidad de que haya agentes chinos o de la secta rival Shugden. Tenemos nuestros propios mecanismos para vigilar actividades sospechosas", the Tibetan Security Minister in exile said then, Ngodup Dongchung.

In India there are some 100.000 Tibetan exiles, many of them in the Himachal Pradesh region.
