AFP: Washington “restless” due to increase in immolations in Tibet

06 December 2012

AFP.- Estados Unidos expresó en la noche del miércoles su "inquietud" y "tristeza" due to the increase in the immolations of Tibetans, and once again urged dialogue between China and the Dalai Lama.
Gansu provinces, Sichuan and Qinghai -these last two, gateways to the Chinese autonomous region of Tibet- They have a large ethnic Tibetan population, and they accuse Beijing of repressing their culture.
Access to these three provinces is theoretically open to the international press accredited in China.. However, in practice, Foreign journalists are prohibited from approaching these Tibetan areas, who live in high tension, and where a large number of Chinese security forces are deployed.
More of 80 personas, mostly Buddhist monks, have immolated themselves or have attempted to do so since March 2011. Cases have increased since last November.
