Thousands of people were expected this Sunday night in Hong Kong for a candlelight vigil commemorating the 28 years of the bloody Tiananmen Square crackdown in Beijing, although this annual event fails to attract the younger generations.
The former British colony and now semi-autonomous region of Hong Kong is the only place in Chinese territory that commemorates the military repression of pro-democracy demonstrations in that square in the center of Beijing, in 1989.
However, in the last two years, student unions have boycotted the vigil held in Victoria Park, for considering your message irrelevant.
The vigil, organized by veteran pro-democracy activists, aims to call for justice for the victims of the Tiananmen crackdown, and also advocates for a democratization of China.
Some young Hong Kong activists say they prefer to prioritize the future of democracy in this city itself and not in China as a whole., all this in a context of growing anti-Beijing sentiment.
Mak Kwan-wai, vice-president of the students' union of Hong Kong Baptist University, He told AFP that building a democratic system in China is not the responsibility of Hong Kong residents..
"Lo que deben hacer los hongkoneses es protegerse a sí mismos", state.
in 2014, The so-called Umbrella Revolution failed in Hong Kong when trying to obtain a minimum political reform from Beijing. Nevertheless, a new generation of militants, that demands autonomy or total independence from Beijing, was born from the ashes of the revolt.
Meanwhile, Hong Kong prepares to celebrate in style next 1 July 20º anniversary of its retrocession to China by the British colonizers, with a pomp totally disproportionate to many of its inhabitants, given the political tensions.
