Shamans of the Yellow Road Shamanism and Buddhism in Mongolia

This course is an introduction to historical and cultural relations between the ancestral shamanism of the Mongolian steppe and the gelugpa lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, known among the Mongols as “The yellow road”. We will study the role of Buddhism in the development of the traditional culture of Mongolia, in the evolution of its ancestral spiritual practices and in the preservation of the Mongol identity in front of the uniformizing currents of modern globalization.

Program:

1. Chamanism and the Mongol world
Mongol nomadic culture. Origins of shamanism in Mongolia. The shamanic worldview. Trance techniques of Mongols shamans.

2. The three arrivals of Buddhism to Mongolia
The nomadic empires of Central Asia and Buddhism. The immediately, The union of the sage and the sovereign. Sonam Gyatso and Altan Kan's encounter. La Figure Del Jebtsundamba Khutuktu en Mongolia.

3. The splendor of Mongol Buddhist culture
The monasteries of the steppe as centers of knowledge. Los “Dharma translators”. Mongol Buddhist Literature. Historical relations between Buddhism and shamanism in Central Asia. Black shamans, White and yellow in Mongolia.

4. Buddhism and shamanism in modern Mongolia
Bogd Kan's Buddhist state. Twentieth century antibudist repression. The Renaissance of Buddhism and shamanism in Modern Mongolia.

Of the teacher:

Miguel Peyró is a doctor in Philology and specialist in Linguistic Anthropology of Central Asia. Author of various academic publications about the Mongol and the Authic languages ​​of Asia. He has been a professor at Oslo universities, Cairo and Seville, and director of the research program “Ethnolinguistic Mongol” From the University of Barcelona.
